AI Transforms
AI Transforms let you rewrite text with AI using a keyboard shortcut. Select the text in any field, press the shortcut, and Voice In replaces the selection with the rewritten version. It works anywhere Voice In can dictate, so you can dictate a rough draft and clean it up without leaving the page.
AI Transforms is a Voice In Plus feature and is currently in beta.
How it works
Dictate or type your text as usual.
Select the text you want to rewrite. Press Ctrl+A (Windows) or ⌘A (Mac) inside the field to select everything in it.
Press the shortcut for the Transform you want. A small "Polishing…" notice appears at the top of the page while the rewrite runs, typically for a couple of seconds.
The rewritten text replaces your selection. If you prefer the original, press Ctrl+Z / ⌘Z to undo.
Only the text you select is sent, and only when you press the shortcut. Nothing is sent while you dictate. The selected text is sent to the Voice In server, rewritten by an AI model, and returned to the page.
Available Transforms
Polish
Fixes speech-recognition errors, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, and makes the text clearer and more concise. Your meaning, voice, and paragraph breaks are kept, and nothing new is added.
Prompt Engineer
Turns a spoken request for an AI assistant into a complete, well-structured prompt with sections for the title, role, task, context, inputs, output requirements, constraints, examples, and an execution checklist.
For example, dictating "the moon is the only natural satellite of earth it orbits around earth at an average distance of 384399 km" and running Polish gives "The Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth. It orbits Earth at an average distance of 384,399 km."
Setting up
Open the Voice In Options page and scroll to the AI Transforms section. Each Transform is shown as a card with its keyboard shortcut.
The Transforms have no shortcut assigned by default. Click Change Keyboard Shortcuts (or open
chrome://extensions/shortcutsin Chrome,edge://extensions/shortcutsin Edge), find Voice In, and assign a key combination to AI Transform 1 (Polish) and AI Transform 2 (Prompt Engineer). A combination such as Alt+1 and Alt+2 works well.Back on the Options page, click Try it out to practice on a sample passage: the sample text is selected for you, so just press the Polish shortcut.
You can also review how keyboard shortcuts work in Voice In in the Keyboard Shortcuts article.
Good to know
Selection required. If nothing is selected when you press the shortcut, Voice In shows "Couldn't detect any text. Select the text, then run Polish again." Select the text and try again.
Sites. AI Transforms work in the same text fields as dictation. They do not work in editors that draw their own text, such as Google Docs, where the text on the page cannot be read by the extension.
Limits. A single Transform accepts up to 20,000 characters. There is a generous daily limit per account to keep the service fast for everyone.
Coming soon. Editing a Transform's instructions and creating your own Transforms are planned for a future release.
Troubleshooting
"AI Transforms need Voice In Plus": the feature requires an active Voice In Plus subscription. See Upgrade To Plus and Activate Plus.
Nothing happens when I press the shortcut: check that a shortcut is assigned on
chrome://extensions/shortcuts, that the cursor is in a text field on the page, and that text is selected. If you recently updated Voice In, reload the page and try again."Please sign in to Voice In again": your Voice In Plus session has expired. Open the Options page and sign in again.
