# AI Transforms

AI Transforms let you rewrite text with AI using a keyboard shortcut. Select the text in a field and press the shortcut. Voice In replaces the selection with the rewritten text. Use them to clean up a rough draft without leaving the page. They work in supported text fields, but not in editors such as Google Docs where Voice In cannot read the selection.

AI Transforms is a **Voice In Plus** feature and is currently in **beta**.

## Set up AI Transforms

1. Open the [Voice In Options page](https://dictanote.co/voicein/options/) and scroll to the **AI Transforms** section. Each Transform appears as a card with its keyboard shortcut.
2. Check the shortcut shown on each card. Polish has a default shortcut: **Alt+1** on Windows, **Option+1** on Mac, or **Alt+Shift+1** on other platforms. Existing assignments or conflicts can change what is available.
3. To change shortcuts, click **Change Keyboard Shortcuts**, or open `chrome://extensions/shortcuts` (Edge: `edge://extensions/shortcuts`). Under **Voice In**, assign shortcuts to **AI Transform 1: Polish** and **AI Transform 2: Custom style**. The second Transform has no default shortcut.
4. On the Options page, click **Try it out** to practice on a sample passage. The sample text is already selected, so press the Polish shortcut.

## How it works

1. Dictate or type your text as usual.
2. Select the text that you want to rewrite. To select all the text in a field, press **Ctrl+A** (Windows) or **⌘A** (Mac) in the field.
3. Press the shortcut for the Transform that you want. A progress notice, such as "Polishing…", appears at the top of the page while the rewrite runs.
4. The rewritten text replaces your selection. To restore the original text, press **Ctrl+Z** / **⌘Z**.

When you run a Transform, Voice In sends the selected text and transformation instructions to its server for AI processing, then returns the rewritten text to the page. Ordinary dictation does not automatically submit text to AI Transforms.

## Available Transforms

| **Polish**          | Fixes speech-recognition errors, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, and makes the text clearer and more concise. Keeps your meaning, voice, and paragraph breaks, and adds nothing new.                                  |
| **Prompt Engineer** | Turns a spoken request for an AI assistant into a complete, well-structured prompt. The prompt has sections for the title, role, task, context, inputs, output requirements, constraints, examples, and an execution checklist. |

For example, dictate *"the moon is the only natural satellite of earth it orbits around earth at an average distance of 384399 km"* and run **Polish**. The result is *"The Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth. It orbits Earth at an average distance of 384,399 km."*

## Good to know

* **Select text first.** If no text is selected when you press the shortcut, Voice In shows "Couldn't detect any text. Select the text, then run Polish again." Select the text and try again.
* **Sites.** Dictation support does not always mean AI Transforms support. In editors such as Google Docs, the extension cannot read the selected text to rewrite it.
* **Limits.** One Transform accepts up to 20,000 characters. Each account also has a generous daily limit, which keeps the service fast for everyone.
* **Custom style.** The second Transform starts as Prompt Engineer. Click **Edit** on its card to change the style name and instructions, then click **Save**. You can reset it to Prompt Engineer in the same dialog. Polish is not editable.

## Troubleshooting

* **"AI Transforms need Voice In Plus"**: This feature needs an active Voice In Plus subscription. See [Upgrade To Plus](/plus/upgrade-to-plus.md) and [Activate Plus](/plus/activate-plus.md).
* **Nothing happens when I press the shortcut**: Make sure that a shortcut is assigned on `chrome://extensions/shortcuts`, the cursor is in a text field on the page, and text is selected. If you updated Voice In recently, reload the page and try again.
* **"Please sign in to Voice In again"**: Your Voice In Plus session has expired. Open the Options page and sign in again.
